Technology

Glen Transport prides itself on being North America's most technologically advanced wood fibre carrier. We are constantly upgrading to new technology when it becomes available as well as developing our own. We have a database programmer on staff whose primary responsibility is to continually develop and upgrade our database and technology systems to meet our needs and the needs of our customers.

Cancom Satellite Communications
Through the use of Cancom Satellite Communications we are able to react in a progressive and proactive manner to the constant changes that are demanded of us by the wood fibre industry. The use of satellite allows us to have continual updates on the positions of our units and constant contact with our drivers. It also allows us to track species, monitor load sizes, maintain bin reports, and have an indefinite archived paper trail of all activities that are taking place at the mills and on the road. Cancom enables us to re-direct loaded trucks to different dumpers or even different pulp mills the minute the call comes in. Empty trucks are redirected to alternate suppliers as wood fibre production fluctuates.

In April 2000, we introduced Sensor Tracs Software to our Cancom system and it is one of the greatest tools we use to protect the public and our employees. With this software we are able to monitor speed, RPM, distance, engine time, moving time, idle time, fuel economy, driving habits, maintenance, vehicle utilization, coasting out of gear, hours of service, and other important safety factors. This system vastly improves our ability to monitor the safe operation of our vehicles. On a monthly basis we monitor driving reports and take disciplinary action where necessary. The file that is developed on each driver is archived and reviewed regularly by the safety officer.

Load Tracking and Reporting
Load tracking and reporting on client login allows our customers to view where their product currently is in transportation as well as how much product has been shipped during the course of the day, week, month, or year.

Bin Monitoring
Providing exceptional service to our customers means eliminating instances of chips hitting the ground. Although we remain in constant contact with each mill and all of our drivers through our 24 hour dispatch and satellite messaging, it is difficult to know the exact level of chip bins and even harder to retrieve information in time to divert a truck to a location requiring urgent service.

Utilizing the internet, wireless and level measuring technology, Glen transport is able to effectively and accurately manage bin levels and have far more notice of potential problems, giving adequate response times. Our bin monitoring system records the levels of each bin allowing our dispatch to view the level in real time, and project, based on the past hours, days, or weeks, when it will be critical to have a truck arrive. All bin level information will be stored in a searchable database allowing even mill managers to search periods of time and extrapolate production rates. Web cameras could also be installed to allow dispatch or mill staff the ability to check on trucks loading, the safety of our drivers, and any problems at the bin.
